In this love song Madonna asks her boyfriend to make up his mind, because she's crazy in love with him. The fans were crazy about the song too, because Madonna scored her first US top 10 hit when she released Borderline in 1984. USA / Europe: November 6, 1984 Photography by: Larry Williams
Though Like A Virgin seems tailor-made for Madonna, the song was actually written a year earlier, without any singer in mind. The songwriter team later gave the demo to Madonna who recorded it with producer Nile Rodgers. The release date had to be pushed back because of Madonna's success with her then-current singles. In November 1984 Madonna finally released it as the title track of her second album, and it would soon become one of her best known songs ever. Like A Virgin was her first #1 hit, stealing the top spot in the US for 6 weeks and eventually reaching Gold. It also reached #1 in Canada, Japan, Australia and numerous other countries. At its sales peak it sold 75.000 copies a day! It marked the beginning of the controversy around Madonna.

While obviously targeting the commercialism of the early '80s, it is until today one of Madonna's most mis-interpreted songs. It's also the one song that had the biggest impact on Madonna's image with journalists and fans calling her a 'material girl' up until today.
The video was shot in Los Angeles and directed by Mary Lambert. Madonna is dressed in a long pink dress, inspired by the one worn by Marilyn Monroe in 'Gentlemen prefer blondes'. Madonna got compared to her idol a lot, but in contrast to Monroe, Madonna isn't a victim. She's in control of her life and her men. In the video she plays with all the boys that are trying to win her love. None of them seem to get her message: while the lyrics talk about pure materialism, that's not what she really wants. It's actor Keith Carradine who knows how to play the game right. In real life however it was actor Sean Penn - whom she met on the set - who won her heart.

In 1985 Madonna made a cameo appearance in the movie Vision Quest: she's seen as a singer in a club. She performs the song Crazy For You. This lovely ballad became Madonna's second #1 hit in the US

Most of 'Angel's success on the US charts was coming from the inclusion of 'Into The Groove' since the soundtrack song wasn't issued on any other release at that time. Europe: July 9, 1985
Madonna wrote this song for Desperately Seeking Susan, her first successful movie. At first it wasn't included in Like A Virgin, neither was it released as a single. In the US it was a B-single of Angel, but turned out a much bigger success than the single itself.
Into The Groove begins with a very bouncy and catchy beat that runs the length of the song. It is more dominant at the beginning of the song becoming more quiet as the song progresses, but it is always there reminding you why you love the song so much and why you never grow tired of hearing it. Madonna then begins her singing with the chorus. This makes a change for usual Madonna songs which begins with the verse, then go onto the chorus. There are a few verses in this song which begin differently, but end the same. The first verse is "Music can be such a revelation, dancing around you feel a sweet sensation. We might be lovers if rhythm's right, I hope this feeling never ends tonight. Only when I'm dancing can I feel this free. At night, I lock the doors where no one else can see. I'm tired of dancing here all by myself, tonight I wanna dance with someone else!" The lyrics are very simple and fun - the type that usually make Madonna's big hits. Examples of this are Material Girl and Like A Virgin. Both were massive hits and have such simple lyrics and joyous melodies that make them become classics. The choruses swing by, as do the verses and a funky piano solo that enhances the quality of the song. The song then gradually fades out leaving the listener with a sense of fulfilment and joy that forces you to press the 'repeat' button on your CD player

In the second half of 1985 Madonna released the fourth and final single from Like A Virgin. This uptempo dance song was perfect to put the attention to Madonna's fashionable style. It hit the no. 5 spot in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, which was rather poor compared to the many top three hits she was scoring. Europe: October 3, 1985
After the huge success of the Crazy For You-single, it was decided to give 'Gambler' the same chance - however only as a European / Asian release - no single was released in the USA. Still, the track turned out to be very popular in the US after a video was put on rotation on MTV - similar to the 'Crazy For You'-video only made up from scenes from the 'Vision Quest'-film.

Papa Don't Preach opens with a superb violin arrangement, before breaking out with a classic beat. The drums are ever present, but the violins add that distressed feeling to the song, which is perfect for what the song's subject is about. Madonna then begins the first verse with, "Papa I know you are going to be upset, 'cos I was always your little girl, but you should know by now, I'm not a baby." The song is about an accidental teenage pregnancy that worries Madonna deeply. She dreads the day that she has to tell her father, who is against her even seeing the man who has got her pregnant. Madonna then sings a fantastic bridge before she moves into the epic chorus with the lyrics, "Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep. Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep, but I made up my mind - I'm keeping my baby, I'm gonna keep my baby!" Madonna then carries on singing her second verse, bridge and chorus, all while under the dramatic influence of the violin. The song then breaks into a glorious solo with just the violin. The song then starts up again with the lyrics, "Daddy, daddy if you could only see, just how good he's been treating me, you'd give us our blessing right now, 'cos we are in love...we are in love!" And from there on, the song continues with the fabulous choruses and Madonna's ever-determined effort to make her father see the positive side that she's pregnant.
The video to Papa Don't Preach is excellent. Madonna dances around in a black room with an awful boob-tube costume on and dreadful bleached hair. In other scenes, she gets to test out her acting skills by hanging with her boyfriend and friends, before going home to tell her father about her situation. The video finally ends with her father giving his approval of her pregnancy. Overall, Papa Don't Preach is a true Madonna classic that deserves all the success it received. Madonna's vocals are on top form as she belts out her emotions to her father - something that would've been unthinkable a year previously. USA / Europe: August 25, 1987
Causing A Commotion begins with that typical synthesiser beat that dominates almost all of Madonna's 1980's songs. The song has a short introduction, before Madonna breaks out with the infectious first line; the chorus of, "I've got the moves baby, you got the motion, if we got together we'd be causing a commotion." She then begins her first verse with the lines, "You met your match when you met me, I know that you will disagree. It's crazy, but opposites attract you see. And I won't let you get away so easy." From these first few lines we can get a clear picture of what the song is all about - Madonna is desperate for a guy she likes to see sense (in her eyes) and get it together with her, saying along the way that they'd be "causing a commotion" in her lines of persuasion. The beat is prominent in the song, and adds to that fantastic dance rhythm which has gone on to form some amazing remixes (check the remixes on this actual CD single). Madonna then goes on to sing her second chorus, a second verse, a couple of bridges and more choruses. The song has a very fast paced feel to it, and this feeling of confusion (not knowing what's coming next) adds to the thrill of this monster hit.

The Look Of Love opens with a very mysterious and serious beat. It sounds very dramatic and Madonna begins her singing after only ten seconds with the lines, "Should have left you standing right where you stood. Should have let you go, should have had the sense to know. Like a train you'd come, and I'd lose my place. Now I'm on this trip, I took a fall from grace." Like many of Madonna's songs, the verses have a simple rhythm to them that are actually very catchy. The chorus then kicks in instantly with, "No where to run, no where to hide. From the look of love, from the eyes of pride. Nowhere to go, no place to run. From the look of love, now I've come undone." The second verse and chorus then move in swiftly, all in the space of just over 40 seconds. We then get a bridge, in which Madonna sings, "My conscience is clear I know right from wrong. That's a lie, I know nothing except that you're gone. But there's more to learn from the look in your eyes. That trip round this world, the stars in the sky." The song then has an amazing instrumental, which, although brief, makes your pay full attention to this great ballad.

Do you know the 'Queen's English'?
This rarely heard track was first released on a various artist-sampler called New Faces in September 1993. Produced by long-time Madonna remixer Junior Vasquez, it featured Madonna's former Blond Ambition World Tour-dancers Jose Guiterez and Luis Camacho [probably best known for wearing the cone-bras during their 'Like A Virgin'-performance] - renamed to Jose & Luis - on the vocals. And most interesting to us: Madonna was heard quite prominently on background vocals! The single of 'Queen's English', featuring several remixes of the track, was released in September 1993. However not much was happening on the charts and even less was heard of Jose & Luis afterwards. They never worked with / for Madonna again. Still it's certainly a fun-track to own in a collection!

"Bedtime Story" was a collaboration of sorts between Madonna and Icelandic popstar Björk. A fan of Björk's solo work, Madonna harbored intentions of working with her, although Björk declined the opportunity of co-operation, instinctively feeling it would be wrong. The Bedtime Stories album producer, Nellee Hooper (also responsible for co-production of Björk's early solo work) asked Björk to contribute to the album sessions, leading to her contribution of the demo "Let's Get Unconscious" especially written for Madonna, which would ultimately become the album's title track. Both Hooper and De Vries changed the composition significantly enough to gain co-writing credits. The lyrics to "Bedtime Story" are Björk's own criticism of Madonna's aesthetic.

In the song, Madonna talks back to the critics who savaged her in the early 1990s when her Erotica album, Sex book, and Body of Evidence movie came out; she always says it's "a little 'fuck you' to all the up-tight prudes of the world". It contains the angry and confronting line directed towards her critcs : "I'm not your bitch don't hang your shit on me." While effective, the profanity would have caused problems for the song to be played on contemporary radio. The radio edit of the song cut this line out, thus reducing the bite the song otherwise would have had. In the "Chorus Door Slam with Nine Sample" version of the song, a door is literally heard slamming over the word "shit". The song samples "What You Need" as performed by hip-hop group Main Source.

H&M said its gross and operating margins for the quarter were the best ever for the period from June to August. The underwear-to-suits maker said in a statement the improvement in margins came "mainly due to a more efficient purchasing process that has led to lower buying prices." H&M, which brought in Madonna for its autumn fashion campaign, had pretax profit of 3.77 billion Swedish crowns ($516 million) in the third quarter. Chief executive Rolf Eriksen said a track-suit the star helped to design had been a top seller. Eriksen said the Madonna deal had got massive media attention. "We have been very satisfied with sales of Madonna's track-suit, it's been the number one on our top-selling list for a couple of weeks," he said.
。 cool。 。。。走了。。happy new year!
